Dave Piatt will be leading this drive. Overview: Depart from University Mazda in Albuquerque at 9:00 AM on October 3 and drive to Silver City with a detour to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Eat at Shevek & Co and stay at the Econo-Lodge. On Sunday morning, we will drive US Highway 191 in Arizona, and then return to Albuquerque via Springerville and Socorro. We should arrive back in Albuquerque by 8 or 9 PM on October 4th. Since we will need a headcount for the restaurant reservation, please RSVP as soon as you know that you'll be going. Dave Piatt will be leading this drive. The following is his description of the trip: With many thanks to Paul and Ken, my cohorts in planning the ride, we will depart October 3rd at 9:00 AM from University Mazda and proceed apace to T&C for a gourmet meal at 5-Star rated Subway Sandwich shop. After a filling repast for vehicle and driver (feeding your navigator is optional), it's off to Silver City via a beautiful but twisted detour to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Most of us have had our fill of exotic spas, haunted hotels and staying in "Billy the Kid Slept Here" former "boarding houses," so we will be staying at the Econo-Lodge . Dinner, created by a CIA -trained chef / owner of Shevek & Co will be served at 7'ish (casual attire required). Arising as soon as humanly possible given our mutually shared age and penchant for cleanliness we will breakfast locally and head out for a white knuckle drive through some of the most scenic and challenging roads in New Mexico. At least one assumes it is scenic, because from this driver's perspective all I saw was quick turns, rocks, cliffs and the white knuckles of my passenger. Just joking -- the roads are mostly empty this time of year, the roads are good and you can have a nice time without asking your passenger to, "Just close your eyes." Finally, we will snack in Springerville (or Quemado), shoot down the straight road to Socorro where we will relive the trip at the Back Stage Grill knowing there is only I-25 before us to get home around 8 or 9PM Sunday night.Rooms at the Econo-Lodge in Silver City are about $80, and you will need to make your own reservations, either by calling toll-free 877-424-6423, or calling the motel directly at 575-534-1111. Paul also provided a map of the route. |
